Khan’s mastery of his voice is what has resonated across continents, faiths, and cultural borders. Accompanied by the sounds of the tabla and harmonium, his voice was otherworldly. The heights his vibrato could reach, the way his falsetto could lift and keep lifting, a spiritual cloud, where we — the audience — were vocally stimulated into enlightenment. There’s a religious depth to this communal euphoria, and so it’s hard to divorce Khan the man from his music. He was a man of God, like a minister, and to access such spiritual planes, he had to soar into its hypnotic melodies.
